A very special Highlight Reel of the Day for my partner Shears, as today we spotlight Luke Helfgott, a 2020 attackman who plays at Yorktown High School in Arlington, VA. Back in the day Shears was an All-County and All-League defenseman for the Patriots and Luke seems to be doing the same on the other side of the field.
Helfgott is a right-handed player with a truly well-balanced skill set. His all around style of play allows the game to come to him. He’s aware the right opportunity to take his defender to the rack and also has the awareness to find his open teammate after drawing an adjacent slide. With decent size, I’d like to see Luke develop more of an outside game. He’s extremely comfortable getting to the 5and5 and confident in tight. I’m sure as he continues to develop his game, the strength will come as well.
Luke had an extremely productive spring for the Patriots, racking up First Team All-County and Second Team All-Liberty Conference as a freshman. He also set the freshman scoring record at Yorktown and was the leading freshman point scorer in the county. His strong performance carried over to his club season where he plays with Mid-Atlantic power VLC. Luke has a strong performance at the Under Armour Underclass tryouts, narrowly missed being selected to the UA Command Division District Team. Helfgott also attended Jake Reed Blue Chip, historically a highly coveted recruiting camp.
