This one stings a bit, as today’s highlight reel of the day spotlights Zack Goorno, a 2019 Attack/Midfielder from Middlesex School in Concord, MA. It only stings because Middlesex (MX) is my high school, St. George’s School’s rival. While I was at SG, we never beat MX in lacrosse, my only win came on the soccer pitch, but back to Zack.
Goorno is a versatile player, who you can put anywhere on then field and you’ll see an immediate contribution. When on attack, he’s got a nose for the goal and the ability to quarterback an offense. When running middie, Zack likes to dodge down the alley and look for the open man popping on the crease. A very athletic player, Zack excels in between the lines. With great speed he’s able to push transition after tenacious play on the defensive end.
I expect Zack to have a breakout junior campaign this spring for MX who will be looking to see who will step up after Duke commit Sam Dwinell transferred to Deerfield for his senior season. Another headline surrounding Middlesex this spring is the absence of legendary head coach, Ned Herter. 2017 was coach Herter’s final season leading the Zebras. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the extremely competitive ISL.
Zack plays his club ball for Foundations Lacrosse, an upstart program based outside of Boston.
